LEE SPENCER-M. CREATIVE DIRECTOR (COPYWRITER)
An award-winning advertising creative, copywriter and film director with a good eye for art direction, a knack for comedy and a background in digital and social.
I’m a creative leader with 13+ years experience in the ad industry – working at AKQA, Ogilvy, JWT, The Royals, Hardhat, Marmalade & Akkomplice – across FMCG, automotive, food, alcohol, banking, tech, telecommunications, retail, tourism, legal services, disability, sports and non-for-profit brands.
When you boil it all down in the creative melting pot, I’m a strategic through-the-line storyteller that considers the entire customer journey from emotional TV commercials to rational digital banners. My craft is creating bold campaign concepts, building lasting brand platforms, writing evocative headlines and scripts, art directing progressive designs, and making presentation decks that sell ideas. I’m also an emerging film director that can get behind the camera to shoot your next ad.
I present my ideas with personality – once taking off my shirt, wearing a snorkel and swimming across a boardroom table to win a pitch. I am passionate about leading by example and fostering an ambitious, collaborative creative culture. My studies include communications, business, screenwriting, comedy writing, fiction writing and film directing. I placed in the top 10 of AWARD School, where I went on to become a mentor.
Through my work, I’ve set Aussies up on dessert dates with Barack Obama and Ricky Gervais (look-alikes) for Sara Lee. Invented new DJ software, using only the sounds of the Honda Civic. Turned KFC’s Colonel Sanders into the hero of a #1 smartphone game. Written the Great Australian Poo-em (on the loo) for Sorbent. Created an imaginary Zooper Dooper flavour. Snuck an official government-like coat of arms, made of sex toys, onto billboards for Wild Secrets. Made 3 people cry (tears of joy) for Charles Darwin University. And held creative directors to ransom in a self promotional stunt.
Outside the ad world, I’ve performed live storytelling. Published my own literature zines at the Sticky Institute. Made my own music history & travel podcasts on Apple & MixCloud. Presented and produced radio shows for SYN and SEN. Interviewed and reviewed bands for Beat Magazine and The Music. Nailed a few wedding speeches. Recently, I wrote and directed my first short film, which was accepted into the Academy Qualifying and BAFTA recognised, Flickerfest 2023. Now I’m onto my next short film...
